What I was doing on 9/11 ten years ago

This was the first image I saw on television

Ten years ago, on this day, one of the greatest modern, human-made disasters occurred. It was then that a group of Muslims from the “religion of peace,” attacked non-combatants (excluding the Pentagon), innocent by-standers, killing 2,977 victims, plus the 19 hijackers.

I can remember the day as if it were yesterday. I was busy buying a car in Centurion (South Africa), and as we were going to start the paper work, one of the salesmen came out of the coffee room saying that America was being attacked. We all rushed in to see what was happening, and I just could not believe what I was seeing. Just 9 months before that, we returned to South Africa after living in Columbus, Ohio for two years. While living there I came to love the country and its people, so when I saw this happening I could almost start feeling a physical ache in my heart as I saw the destruction and death of so many people. Watching the people running in the streets and the billowing dust from the buildings that came thundering down, I could see the fear in their faces and the panic that ensued. It was unbelievable. It was like watching one of Bruce Willis’ Die Hard movies! I couldn’t fathom how this could all be real! I sat and watched there for a very long time, until I could take it no longer.

The car salesman and I completed the paper work, I transferred the money to them, and then I rushed back to work to tell everyone there what had happened. Everyone tried to check out different news sites like CNN, but CNN’s website had so many people trying to get in that from our vantage point, it seemed to have died from all the pressure. At the end of the working day I rushed home to switch on the television. This must be the longest single “program” I ever watched on television. I watched as they replayed all the different scenes over and over again till I simply had to go to bed that night, feeling numb.

APTOPIX Sept 11 AnniversaryIt is indeed a day to remember, and we salute those that have died and those who so selflessly gave of themselves to rush in to help. Firefighters and police died there that day helping others. May the families and friends who lost loved ones, and who were so ruthlessly affected by this heart-rendering event find peace in their hearts, and may this once again be a time in which people will seek out the grace of Jesus Christ, for salvation is in Him alone.

We must remember that on 11 September 2001, the world fell apart for most clear thinking Americans. Americans of all walks of life had to rethink their values and aspirations. Suddenly, as out of the blue, they were thrust into a war against terrorism—which in large part was funded by those nations known as the “axis of evil.” It was at this time also that many Americans came face to face with the foundations of their existence, that in which they put their trust. Did they boast in chariots and horses—their new technological war machines—or did they boast in the Lord (Ps 20:7)? Our trust, while living in a world that is under terrifying, stressful upheavals, should remain in God, no matter what!

(17)  Though the fig tree should not blossom And there be no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive should fail And the fields produce no food, Though the flock should be cut off from the fold And there be no cattle in the stalls,  (18)  Yet I will exult in the LORD, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.  (19)  The Lord GOD is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds' feet, And makes me walk on my high places. (Habakkuk 3:17-19 NASB)

Like Habakkuk, we should put all our trust in God, at all times! J.R. Vassar says something profound in the latest TableTalk magazine entitled, 9/11 Ten Years Later, from Ligonier Ministries. In an article he entitled, What If or If God?, Vassar writes:

What do you fear? How have your fears robbed you of a chance to shape the future of another person, a neighborhood, a city, or even a nation? How many people have you forfeited the opportunity to bless because of your fears? If God is holy, sovereign, wise, good, powerful, and abounding in love, let us resolve to no longer ascribe greater authority to our fears than we do to God.

To all Americans out there, do not put your hope in military weapons, or your natural “fix-it” mindset, but rather put your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. While evil seems to be rampant now, the day will come when no evil will be able to exist, when Christ will return as the King of kings!
